I’ve been there. In fact I’ve designed clothing for the most extreme environments but been told that a women’s fit version wasn’t necessary, because women don't really go to those places. And for the few that do, they can just buy the men’s version in a size down.

I’ve tried that, and it doesn’t work. The synthetic trousers I designed for men fitted me so poorly I could only wear them in basecamp, not on the climb as they were too tight on the hips, too long in the leg and had so much excess fabric I would snag my crampons on them every step.

A friend bought a men’s 7000m down jacket I’d designed in size Medium so she could do it up around her hips, but the rest of it drowned her slight size 8 frame. We summited a 5400m peak in the Andes together, and all I could think was ‘that jacket would work so much better and be so much lighter if it actually fit her’.

That's what inspired Vertura.

So, here we are. Trying to redress the balance. To level the playing field. To make the technical women’s clothing that is ‘too niche’ or 'not commercial enough' for the big brands to justify keeping in their range. By focusing solely on performance clothing for women, Vertura aims to be a company that puts women first at every stage, from design to purchasing and production. We're at the start of our journey, as developing technical clothing takes time. It won’t be easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

We hope by making clothing that improves women’s comfort in high and cold places, we’ll enable more women to enjoy those places. Together, we can inspire and encourage more women to explore the edge of their comfort zone, and show the world that there is nowhere we don’t belong.

See you out there!
